Third Grade Student Gallery
![]() Symmetrical and Asymmetrical TreesStudents began the year by exploring balance as found in art. Symmetrical balance is achieved when shapes are placed evenly on either side of a mid-line. Asymmetrical balance occurs when shapes, weight, and size are not placed evenly on each side of the mid-line. Third graders then reviewed the primary colors and mixed them to create secondary colors (purple, green, and orange). They painted their compositions using two primary colors and their corresponding secondary color. | ![]() Day of the Dead RepousseStudents learned about the Day of the Dead and the many symbols associated with the holiday. After selecting a symbol (marigolds, sugar skulls, etc.) they drew it on paper then transferred it onto a piece of metal. Once the drawing was completed the students used shoe polish to give their work definition. | ![]() Winter MapsTwo whole weeks off of school! woohoo! When third graders returned from winter break they created maps to chart their adventures and journeys. Drawing inspiration from Indian artist Teju Bejan's "Drawings from the City" they added many details and intricate patterns to their drawings. |

![]() Clay MasksMasks have been used for thousands of years by cultures all over the world. After exploring a wide range of uses and styles of masks students created their own mask from a clay slab. They learned to shape coils, balls, and cut details from slabs then slip and score their pieces to create expressive features. |
